This long but shallow backyard in a suburb east of Seattle incorporates a dining patio, a small but meticulous lawn, a dry streambed, and plantings for year-round interest in a small backyard space just 35 feet deep x 135 feet long, roughly one tenth of an acre. Following an addition to the home, the landscape designers used elevation changes to carve the space into distinct areas for entertaining and strolling, and to offer peaceful views from the new family room. Care was taken to match materials on the existing patio and foundation facade, and a Zen-like design incorporates the Japanese maples and dry streambed filled with river rock.Melinda Matson
